Taking Complete WordPress Blog backup is not tricky and nor it required any extra programming skill. You can easily take backup from cpanel and download it on your system for future reference. In this tutorial I am going to discuss about taking WordPress Blog backup on Cloud Storage Services like Google Drive. Taking Backup is a must to do task in Blogging, since there are so many attacks launched against WordPress Blog in recent times which makes backups even more important. Cloud Storage offers a very secure way to take complete WordPress Backup. In this post I will show how to take Complete WordPress Backup on Google Drive.
Complete WordPress Backup on Google Drive
To take WordPress Blog backup on Google Drive, you need to have a Gmail account which will be used to get access to Google Drive. Creating email account is very easy and don’t need any demonstration, so I am skipping that part. The next thing you need is to install and activate Updatedraftplus Backups WordPress plugin. The plugin is free to use and very easy to configure. To install the plugin click on Add New from plugins options and search for “UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore“, Install and activate the plugin.
Click on Settings from UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore plugin option as shown in the screenshot below.
In the following screen, you will see different options like Backup, Restore and others. Scroll down the page till you see option like shown in the image below. Select Google Drive as Remote Cloud Storage
Next step is to authenticate the plugin to use Google Drive as Cloud Storage for Complete WordPress Blog Backup. Open the link “Google API Console” in new window
You have to create new project, so Click on Create Project in Google APIs Console Window which will take you next step where new project and Drive API needs to be configure.
Click on “Create Project” Button and enter any project as your wish. You must verify yourself by SMS or Voice Call authentication method. The wizard will make you verify before creating new project
To start taking WordPress Blog Backup, Drive API should be activated and by default it is inactive. So navigate to APIs & auth menu option on the left side and click on APIs. Look for Drive API by scrolling down the page and make sure to turn the service ON.
Now Click on “Registered Apps” menu item just below APIs on the left side of window. There you need to register new App, so click on the button as shown below
Register new Application by entering New App Name and select the platform as per your need. For this tutorial I have selected Web Application. After details are entered click on Register Button
Select the “oAuth 2.0 Client ID” service to start authentication process with WordPress plugin
On the next screen, you have to enter the details of your Blog. In Web Origin enter Blog website address like “www.example.com” and in Redirect URI enter the URL which can be copied from WordPress plugin setting page. You have to go back to UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore plugin settings page and look for the necessary information. Click on Generate Button to get Google Client ID and Secret Key.
Copy the details like Google Client ID, Secret Key and Folder Id(Get it from Google drive). See Screenshot below for more information
Now Start the Backup process by Clicking “Backup” button. But before you can take complete WordPress Backup on Google Drive you have to complete the authentication process. When backup is complete go to Google drive folder and you will something like that.
